Faith Family Farm

Looking Well to Our Households

Our family is making most of our cleaning and health and beauty products, and we want to share with you how we do it, and what has worked for us.  I have found the recipes from different websites or from friends, and will share that as well.  We believe it is safer without all the extra chemicals we cannot even pronounce and in most cases significantly cheaper on the wallet.  We buy absolutely NO shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, lotions, makeup remover pads or astringents, toilet bowl cleaner, all purpose cleaner, tub and tile scum cleaner, laundry detergent, and that just about covers it.

The shampoo we use has only 2 ingredients plus water.

Here is the disclaimer, it will take your hair a few weeks to get use to the new products with no chemicals.  Depending on the length of your hair it can take much longer.  Your hair will go through a detox process to rid itself of the chemicals and replace with your natural oils and the closing of the hair cuticles. 2 of my girls and my hair is long so it took us much longer than others I knew who had shorter hair.  But, if you still really scrub and wash thoroughly, it will still look clean, it just may not feel as clean until it finishes the detox process.  We almost gave up but now do NOT want to go back to anything store bought for fear of having to go back through that process all over again!

The most expensive ingredient is the castile soap, and we had only found Dr. Bronner's, until now.  We order from swansonvitamins.com and found another brand by Dr. Woods, and it is much cheaper than Bronner's.  We have not tried it but it should be fine; we will let you know how it goes.

The recipe calls for small amounts so I will give that and then how we make it for our family of 6.

Castile Shampoo Recipe:                      Our amounts:

1/4 C. water                                               4 Cups
1/4 C. liquid Castile soap                       4 Cups
1/2 t. oil (jojoba, olive, grapeseed)      8 teaspoons

Mix and pour into plastic or glass containers.

We pour ours into good spray bottles and the leftover into quart jars, then send one bottle upstairs and one in my bath.  Spray good, massage, and scrub in, then rinse.  Lathers well, and you may have to play to see how much you need, you may need to spray more or less; just experiment.

That's it!  Really simple!  It is mostly diluting the castile soap and adding an oil.  We use jojoba oil because we read it is good for your hair.  We haven't always used it, we have used olive oil, but I like jojoba better.  This is the recipe that has worked best for our hair.

Now, for the conditioner:
Apple Cider Vinegar and water, yep, that's it!

1 T. ACV to 1 C. water

We like to put it in the ketchup and mustard squeeze bottles that you see here; that seems to work much better than spraying for some reason, and again you will have to experiment to see how much to use.  Everyone's hair is different.

Now, for the part you may really find weird...After you make it through the entire detox process, you may not have to shampoo every time.  I know, really?  Yes, really.  The cuticles in your hair will be closed, it is even harder to get your hair wet, it just won't soak up the water or anything for that matter.  It dries so much faster as well.

Some people go with the "no-poo" method, and I can't quite go there the whole way, but my daughters are doing this between washing with our homemade shampoo.  It is simply a mixture of 1 T. Baking Soda, and 1 Cup of water.  Put in the same type squeeze bottle as the ACV Rinse is in and scrub in and rinse.  I will say sometimes they only wash with water, yes clean, pure water, well as pure as our city water can be, yes we have icky city water, nasty stuff.  Wish our well hadn't begun drying up, but oh well.  Anyways, go here to see others who go "no-poo."
Here's a couple other sites, here and here to check out.

Now you have homemade shampoo and conditioner; go have fun in making your home free of icky chemicals.

One website on making homemade products is here.  Check it out.  I can't remember the others right now.  When I do, I'll let you know.

Being a keeper of the home and creating a safer environment for your family is wonderful!  We get to use our gifts and abilities God has given us in making our homes better.

"She looks well to the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness."

Oh, I think that's great! Sarah told me recently that you made your own shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, lotions, etc. and I thought that was so cool. I knew I was going to have to ask for your reipes so thank you for sharing one of the websites you use!

Wanted to let you know how much I have enjoyed reading these last several posts. It was nice to listen to your life story and get to know you a little better through your blog. I remember many years ago going to a few MOPS meetings and when they introduced the Mom Mentor I thought to myself Wow I've got several more years till I'm her age and now here I am 13 years and 5 more kids in the family later. It doesn't seem possible that so many years have gone by. Even though I've spent them enjoying my children I wish I had done even more with them. Strange I guess since I spent every day with them but it goes SO quickly. Hope to try and plan a day to meet up so we can visit when you have some extra time. Let your girls know I'm trying their cheesecake recipe this weekend!!! Missy

Thank you so much Missy, it DOES go way too fast even though during that time it seems like it will never end. I am so thankful to still have my wonderful daughters here and that they love and want to obey God's entire Word for their lives. Their and our desire is for them to be able to be a help meet to a future husband in whatever he does, whether it is farming, accounting, mechanics, any business, we pray they have been prepared by all their hard work in helping their father and their grandparents. They understand honor, obedience, submission to authority, respect, love and all of God's Word, and we are so grateful for them and what they bring to our family. Our son is such a hard worker as well and enjoys helping others, and has had many opportunities simply because of our home education, and we are ever grateful.
I have tried to email you again, so just send me an email at faithfamily6@gmail.com and maybe we can get something together.

Thank you Ashlin, I will be putting our other recipes on before too long, so keep checking back. It's been fun learning and experimenting. I'm so glad Sarah got to visit with you this past week, that is such a blessing.

I love the idea of that but just don't think I could go through the 'not feeling so clean' process. I really wish we didn't use chemicals, I actually went through a chemical detox a few years ago but slowly we are back to normal. I will be popping back to check out your other home made ideas, thank you for honouring the Lord in this way.
Every blessing
Julie

Hi Jody, Not sure why I haven't received your emails unless they are going to our old bellsouth email address. I thought I changed our email on my blog. But considering I'm not very computer minded I might not have done it right. I'll send you an email that is my husbands so I will definitely get your messages (they go straight to his phone and laptop). We are both using that one and a gmail account right now but I had someone else tell me they sent me a message on gmail and I didn't get it either. Not sure what is going on with our emails right now. If you see one come through from Sammy (Waterville Baptist Church) that's me.
On another note have you got your Vision Forum catalog for the year in the mail yet? We are looking forward to ours!!! Everyone loves it. I was wondering if you could suggest any kind of study that you might have done with your son. I remember when I first found your blog that I read about a "coming into manhood ceremony" (not sure what exactly it was called) and I just love that idea. Josiah will be 12 next month. So not sure when we would do it, probably in the next few years. We really want to do some one on one discipleship with him and my husband and then have something really special for him after that. We have Raising a Modern Day Night and Plants Grown Up (Doorpost) but I wondered if you and your husband had done any kind of a study with him from Vision Forum. All the products we have bought from them have been well worth the money!!! Thanks again for sharing with us about your family. We have enjoyed reading everything! We feel like we know you guys even though it is just through blog reading!!! Hope you all have a very blessed weekend!!! Missy

Missy, it was a bellsouth address. Oh, well, we will get it together soon. I had that one and didn't go through your blog this time so it probably is right there.
I have NOT received our catalog yet. Yes I will be looking for it soon. I love their resources as well and we have many of them. If you are looking for a book, ask to borrow first, we LOVE having books, books, and more books, and DVDs of course. I will look at our resources and let you know what we have available. The Modern Day Knight is a good one, we used it as well. Did you see the ceremony we had? Sarah had most of the pics on her blog, threemaidens.blogspot.com. There were a few here.
We WILL meet sometime and then we WILL know each other. This just makes it all the sweeter.
Always Experiencing Him,
Jody
