We have been using homemade laundry detergent for some time now, and really love it.
This is the 2nd recipe we have used, and I like it better. No real reason why, just a personal opinion, well, it is prettier to have sitting out in the utility room, so maybe that's why, or maybe because it is so easy to mix and quick, as well. Anyway, here is the recipe, and there are many variations online, this is the one I chose:
(Sorry for the blurry pic, don't know what happened)
One 56 oz.box of Borax
One 55 oz. box of Super Washing Soda
2 C of Baking Soda
2 tubs of Oxi Clean (Dollar Store brands are cheaper)
2 bars of Zote or 3 bars of Fels Naphtha Soap
Shred the bar soaps, or chop with Ninja processor, mix all together, (the big green tub was easy to mix in) and put in a pretty glass jar to display.
Use 2-4 T depending on your washer and loads of clothes. I have found even with our old plain washer 2 T works great. So, for HEs you should never need more than 2 T.
I will use Fels Naphtha next time, one, it is a bit cheaper, although you need 3 bars, two, I like the smell, and three, the lemon color is pretty as well, although the pink is pretty too.
For my fabric softener, I am using vinegar in my downy softener ball and that seems to work well.
This actually made 2 gallons. These are 1 gallon jars from Walmart.
I am currently in the process of putting a shelf up over my washer and dryer, per Pinterest, actually my hubby is, and then it will look even better with these jars right there. I will put some pics up after the shelf is finished. I have it painted, and it will go up tonight! Yay!!!
Always trying to make our household a better place. What are you doing different at your home?

Hi Jody, Thank you for your sweet comment. Yes, we were all well all through the weekend. We all went to church Sunday morning and I suspect that is how we got it. We have heard of several that have suffered with it lately. We were looking forward to our Nashville trip and hadn't even thought about sickness changing our plans until Samuel got sick but he felt better quickly so I am really thankful for that.
We have been washing lots this week and I was saying how we were out of detergent again so I think I'm going to try your recipe. I used to do the liquid form of that for years but then just got out of the habit of making it. I used the recipe the Duggar family have on their website. I think people used to think I was odd but now I see that lots of people are trying it. I usually use Fels Naptha but I like the pink color too.
Hopefully when we are better and get back on track we can plan a visit for you all to come to our house if you'd like. We are staying in tomorrow and probably will watch some SM Davis sermon DVD's. This is the first Sunday since we have been at Waterville that Sammy has missed for his personal sickness. He missed when I was in the hospital with Daniel and on vacation when we had our other babies but never for sickness. I think he feels guilty but it can't be helped. Talk to you soon!!! Missy
We love making our own laundry detergent. I think my recipe is the same as yours. :) Don't you think it looks pretty sitting in the laundry room in the glass jar? (Mine is almost just like yours) I'm so glad I found your blog. :)
Blessings,
Tammy
Missy, I sure hope your family is all well now! Good to hear from you!
Tammy, I'm glad you found my blog as well! Thanks for following!
I used to make the liquid which made 10 gallons, but I like the looks and ease of this better. Thanks for your sweet comments!
